Central & South America Journeys with

In April group members will embark on a very special journey. The mix of venues is kaleidoscopic: pristine tropical jungle rich with wildlife, accommodations at the base of a grumpily erupting volcano, underground rivers, caves eerily sprinkled with the crystallized remains of Mayan human sacrifices, and remote reefs and seas of inspirational beauty. We start off in Costa Rica on a hunt for the incredibly plumaged Resplendent Quetzal, then segue to the dramatic Arenal Volcano with a recent history of irregular belches. Fly on to colorful, casual English-speaking Belize, a racial potpourri unique in Central America of whites, creoles, Indians, mestizos and descendents of black African slaves. The jungled interior of Belize is dotted with Mayan ruins and pocked with caves that the ancient Mayans believed were secret entrances to their mythic Underworld. The great Belizean Barrier Reef is the second longest in the world, and beyond lie atolls and islands of intense appeal. For three nights we base on Long Caye, part of in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll east of the Belizean Barrier Reef, to sample its superb aquatics. Accommodations are in 4-star hotels and lodges.
